ELEVEN

Matthew jerked awake when a sharp pain traveled down his arm. He got up and found the Tylenol still sitting on the table where Rochelle had left it. He poured himself a drink of water and took another pill. Through the kitchen window, he saw that it was still dark outside and snowing heavily. The clock on the stove said it was five in the morning. In another two hours, he’d be saying goodbye to Rochelle and Jamie.

The kiss last night had not been impulsive. He wanted her to know how he felt even if he would never see her again. Her hand had rested on his chest for a moment when he leaned down to kiss her. He was struck by the bittersweetness of that touch. She’d never again press her hand against his heart and feel it beating. And he’d never smell her honey-scented skin.

He closed his eyes and rubbed the area between his eyebrows. It was what it was. He couldn’t change it. They couldn’t even complete the first step of finding an honest cop who believed them, let alone put a case together against Corben. She was probably right about needing to leave town. Why did it feel as if he was in a perpetual state of saying goodbye to her?

He showered while the others slept. When everyone else was getting cleaned up, he made bacon, eggs and toast for them.

Rochelle came into the kitchen, her long brown hair still wet from the shower. “Wow, this looks like quite a feast.”

Her tone was so formal, as though she were already trying to put emotional distance between the two of them.

“Thought you’d like a hardy breakfast. Kind of hard to find good food on a long bus ride.”

She didn’t respond, but he thought he saw sorrow in her eyes.

Daniel bounded into the kitchen. “Whoa, someone’s been busy. Chef Matthew is in the house.”

“It’s the least I can do for you after all you’ve done for us.” He patted Daniel on the back.

They ate the meal, talking about things that didn’t matter. From time to time, he caught Rochelle watching him. So much was going unsaid between them, and it would never be spoken. If only they had more time.

Matthew warmed up Daniel’s car. Jamie got into the back and Rochelle sat beside Matthew in the passenger seat. A snowplow went by on the street.

“It snowed a lot last night,” Matthew said. The comment seemed shallow. Was the weather the only safe thing they could talk about?

When they got out to a main street, the snowplows had piled the snow high enough so that it formed a wall on either side of the street. Traffic was light at this hour.

“Are the buses even going to be running?” Rochelle’s voice sounded strained.

Matthew clicked on the radio. They were three blocks away from the bus station when a news report about the storm finally came on. The major highways going out of Discovery were closed and not expected to be cleared for at least a day or more.
